Η ιδέα του για τα ζυμαρικά είναι ως ακολούθως (from the Powers of food, A.D.180)

(Serventi and Sabban: Pasta Εισαγωγή).

Οι ΄Ελληνες είχαν τις λέξεις ίτριον (derivative of the verb τρέω>τρείω>τιτράω και τράω που σημαίνει =to pierce and to perforate according to the Greek English Lexicon page 718, which are nouns formed directly from a verbal stem and in this case it derives from the second aorist of the above verb, το θέμα του οποίου είναι τρι-) και λαζάνια (από το λάγανον που σημαίνει ένα επίπεδο ψωμί, και οι δύο λέξεις ελληνικής προέλευσης. Μία άλλη λέξη που θα πρέπει να εξετάσει και να αναλύσει κανείς είναι η τρακτός (dough drawn out or rolled for pastry) (according to its existence Ath.3.113a and Liddell and Scott page 1810) και προέρχεται από το ρήμα τρακταίζω που σημαίνει με την σειρά του to handle or manage < και από την οποίαν προέρχεται η λέξη τραχανάς:ειδικό παραδοσιακό ζυμαρικό που φτιάχνεται και στην Πελοπόνησσο και σε όλη την Ελλάδα.
Η λέξη ήτριον και Δωρικά άτριον σημαίνει τα strips of pasta ενώ ίτριον σημαίνει το παστέλλι (sesame bar/cake with sesame and honey (Greek English Lexicon p.810)

(Crates Comic.Fragmenta3,line 4)

( Julius Pollux Gramm.,Onomasticon book 6 section 53, line)

Στην βάση του αγάλματος βρίσκεται το Αμερικανικό Μουσείο της Μεταναστεύσεως (Ameri¬can Museum of Immigration).

Aspects of Interlanguage Contact:Greek and Australian Enlish από Γιώργο Καναράκη -

Aspects of Interlanguage Contact
Greek and Australian English

George Kanarakis

Abstract

Linguists accept that no languages, the users of which have come into contact with one another, are completely pure and free of transferred and borrowed language forms. Interlanguage transferences and borrowings, therefore, are considered a natural, universal phenomenon, and not accidental.
This paper aims at providing a cohesive account of the linguistic situation which has resulted from the interlanguage contact between Greek and Australian English. It will focus on two essential aspects: the impact of Australian English upon Greek in the immigrant context of Australia, and the influence of Greek upon Australian English. To present a more comprehensive picture, it will examine both direct and indirect influences, as well as their impact on different levels of language analysis (mainly phonological, morphological, and lexical), illustrated by a variety of oral and written (including literary) examples.

Introduction
A language does not develop just through its own means, but also through the influence exerted on it, to various degrees, by other languages through the bilingual and multilingual individuals of the different language communities. Linguists accept that no language is pure and free of borrowed forms. This is why borrowings are, and must be considered, a natural and therefore universal phenomenon. The French linguist Louis Guilbert claims that “borrowing is a lingustic phenomenon the study of which goes hand in hand with the history of the development of a language” (Guilbert, 1975:46). What is considered by the broader public as the influence of one language upon another, is regarded by the experts as “external linguistic borrowing”, in contrast to “internal linguistic borrowing”, that is absorption of elements by a social group or class into another within the environment of the same language or dialect. So, “external linguistic borrowing” is the acceptance and embodiment of linguistic structures (forms) and meanings (content) from one language into another, which makes use of them either unadjusted or adjusted, partially or wholly, at all levels of language analysis: phonological, graphemic, morphological, syntactic, and lexical.
With regard to the adjusted loan words of a language versus the unadjusted ones, the former constitute the majority. A contributing factor is that many of the loan words, although during the initial period of their history within the environment of the receiving language they are unadjusted, later become adjusted (partially or totally) into the system of that language.
In general, borrowed or loan words usually function according to the rules of the receiving language and they often create derivatives or compound words:

Words adjusted to the Greek inflectional language system
Singular Plural

Derivatives and compound words
Loan words Derivatives

Loan words Compound words
English humour > Greek χιούμορ ψευτοχιούμορ
Latin cannata > Greek κα(ν)νάτα κρασοκανάτας

The causes of interlanguage borrowing are diverse, comprising broad nets which in turn constitute a variety of categories, such as:
social (immigration, long residence in another country, social prestige, exhibitionism, etc.)
politico-military (occupation, colonisation, etc.)
economic (commerce, trade, etc.)
cultural (education, new technology, science, entertainment, sports, mass communication media, etc.)
religious (expansion of religions, etc.)
psychological
linguistic (internationally established foreign terms, brevity of foreign words in comparison to the corresponding words of the receiving language [τρένο ≠ σιδηρόδρομος etc.)

Usually, the interlanguage borrowing is activated in four main cases:
a. When there are no structures or elements available in the receiving language for covering its new needs (e.g. κοάλα, μπούμερανγκ from Australian English, τσετσέ from African Bantu, φιορδ from Norwegian).
b. When the receiving language lacks suitable structures or elements for absolute, or even satisfactory, coverage (e.g. μουλάς (from Arabic) instead of μουσουλμάνος κληρικός or μπουτίκ (from French) instead of κατάστημα).
c. Because of prolonged aural assimilation, as with individuals living and working in a foreign-language environment (e.g. a Greek-language person living in Australia where the dominant language is English).
d. Because of lack of knowledge of existing Greek words due to the immigrant’s limited Greek education (e.g. χοστέσα (hostess) instead of οικοδέσποινα, αεροσυνοδός, αρχισερβιτόρα).
However, the time comes when the borrowings no longer reflect particular language characteristics of individuals but steady and well established language qualities used by most bilinguals in daily communication, a linguistic communicative medium which, because of its idiosyncracy (native language spoken in a non-native environment under the powerful and continuous influence of the language of the new country) develops into what is known as an “ethnolect”.

The influence of Australian English on Greek
The Greek language in Australia has not escaped the ethnolectic process because it is not the dominant language, but a minority one co-existing with many other minority languages in a multicultural society, the official language of which is (Australian) English.
The degree of the borrowing process naturally varies among bilinguals according to the level of their English language knowledge. Among Greek-born individuals, in general, the better their knowledge of Greek is, in comparison with Australian English, the weaker (or even nil) the influence of Australian English appears when they speak Greek. In contrast, Australian-born Greeks and those whose knowledge of English is better than that of Greek, use more loan words borrowed from Australian English in their Greek-language oral communication. Of course, loan words from Australian English established as steady language elements of the Greek ethnolect of Australia in place of the corresponding Greek words, are used in speech by all, or at least by most Greek Australians:
Another interesting observation is that when Greeks or individuals of Greek origin in Australia use loan words borrowed from Greek speakers in other English-language countries (USA, Canada, South Africa, etc.), and therefore belonging to other varieties of English, they are not understood. This is because these borrowings (either adjusted to the Greek language (hellenised loans) or unadjusted) are or derive from English words or meanings not used in Australian English, and are therefore not comprehensible:
From USA English:
bum > μπόμπης ‘derelict (dero)’
elevated (electric) train [the el] > ελεβέτα
quarter (25 cents) > κοράκι
[seating] hostess > χοστέσα ‘waitress in charge’

From Canadian English:
Park Avenue (a road in Montreal) > Παρκαβενέικα
quarter (25 cents) > κοράκι

The influence of Australian English on Greek in Australia is most obvious at least on two language levels, the phonological and especially the lexical, including words and phrase structures.

Phonological level
Phonemes
Many second or third generation individuals of Greek origin pronounce the voiceless stops /p, t, k/ in Greek word initial position with aspiration, that is as / p‛, t‛, k‛/, the trill /ř/ as a retroflex /r/, the velar fricative /χ/ as a glottal fricative /h/, and in some cases the clear alveolar /l/ as a dark alveolar /ł /:
/p‛oté/ ‘never’ instead of /poté/
/t‛únel/ ‘tunnel’ instead of /túnel/
/k‛amíla/ ‘camel’ instead of /kamíla/
/róði/ ‘pomegranate’» instead of /řóði/
/héri/ ‘hand’ instead of /χéri/
/łáði/ ‘oil’ instead of /láði/
Intonation
Many second or third generation Greek Australians (especially women) tend to use intonation patterns of Australian English instead of Greek, particularly in cases of some interrogative sentences (open and wh- questions), where instead of using the Greek intonation pattern 2 – 3 – 3 they use the Australian English 2 – 3 – 1:
Είσαι εκεί; ‘Are you there?’ [open question]
(Pattern: 2 – 3 – 1 instead of 2 – 3 – 3 )
Πώς σε λένε; ‘What’s your name?’ [wh- question]
(Pattern: 2 – 3 –1 instead of 2 – 3 – 3)

Lexical level
The loans on this level can be classified as independent unadjusted words, “hellenised” words and loan translations.
Independent unadjusted loan words
This type of borrowing is noticed mainly among Australian-born Greeks whose English is better than Greek.
το στράϊκ ‘strike’
το ντίγκο ‘dingo’
το πάϊ ‘pie’

In this category of unadjusted loans there are at least two cases which attract the interest of researchers:
i. Ιn Greek-language communication we encounter phrase structures composed of the verb κάνω and an independent English word, most frequently of course unadjusted, although sometimes adjusted as well:
κάνω ντράιβ ‘I drive’
κάνω σάουαρ ‘I shower’
but also κάνω μάπα ‘I mop’
κάνω τσόπισμα ‘I chop’
ii. The second case deals with the phenomenon of simplification which characterises the English inflectional system compared with the more synthetic inflectional Greek one. This is clearly noticed in the Greek surnames. Sometimes an Australian-born Greek is heard to say του κου Πετράκης, του κου Αθανασόπουλος following the uninflected English noun system Mr Petrakis > of Mr Petrakis, Mr Athanasopoulos > of Mr Athanasopoulos.

“Hellenised” words
These are Australian words morphologically adjusted to the Greek inflectional system by acquiring Greek endings. This category seems to be the largest and can be subdivided into three smaller groups:
i. The first group consists of loan words to which a Greek ending is added.
F.e. Melbourne > Μελβούρνη
Adelaide > Αδελαΐδα [Austr. English /àdelaid/]
drive > ντραϊβάρω
agent > ατζέντης
steam > στίμη
basket > μπασκέτα [> μπασκετούλα]
sandwich > σέμιτζα [Aust. English/sǽmidz/]

Note that many one-syllable Australian English loan words in the process of morphological adjustment to the Greek inflectional system become neuter gender nouns with the ending in -ι ~ (pl.) –ια:
bill μπίλ-ι ~ -ια
cake κέκ-ι ~ -ια [> κεκάδικο]
job ντζόμπ-ι ~ -ια
flat φλάτ-ι ~ -ια [ > φλατάκι]
truck τράκ-ι ~ -ια
jar τζάρ-ι ~ -ια [ > τζαράκι]

ii. In the second group the endings of the loan words are substituted by Greek endings according to the Greek gender they have acquired:
television > (το) τελεβίζιο (neut.)
accountant > (ο) ακέοντας (masc.)
Newtown ‘suburb of Sydney’ > τα Νιουτέικα (neut. pl.)
The Australian words, and English words in general, ending in -er belong to this group of borrowings. This is so because, since the pronunciation // of this ending does not exist in the Greek language, the loan words are usually adjusted by taking the Greek feminine gender noun ending -a:
blinker > μπλίνκα
heater > χίτα
hamburger > χαμπούργκα
freezer > φρίζα
but Peter > Πίτας (masc.)

iii. The third group carry a double meaning, one for the Greeks in Australia who speak the ethnolect and another for the Greeks in Australia or Greece who speak Modern Greek Koine:
Greek ethnolect in Australia Modern Greek Koine
stamp > στάμπα ‘stamp’ (for letters) ‘seal’, ‘imprint’
note > νότα ‘bond’, ‘bill’ ‘musical sound’
boot > μπούτι ‘car trunk’ ‘thigh’, ‘leg’ (animal)
deposit > ντεπόζιτο ‘down payment’, ‘bond’ ‘container for liquids’
car > κάρο ‘motor car’ ‘cart’
loaf > λόφος ‘loaf of bread’ ‘high ground’, ‘rise’,
‘hillock’
metre > μήτρα ‘parking metre’ ‘womb’

The hellenisation process should not surprise, simply because it constitutes a common linguistic process resulting from interlanguage contact. After all this happens continually in Modern Greek Koine with the morphological adjustment to the Greek inflectional system of words borrowed from other languages:
Singular Plural
τρένο – τρένα < Italian treno < French train
ταξί – ταξιά < French taxi (first element of the compound word of Greek
ράδιο – ράδια < English radio < English radium < Latin radius (first
element of compound Greek origin words, such as
radiophony)
κιμάς – κιμάδες < Turkish kiyma < Turkish verb kiymak ‘I cut’, ‘I chop’
It is interesting that many of these hellenised words are so entrenched in the Modern Greek Koine vocabulary that usually only language experts or linguists detect their foreign origin.

Loan translations
These are words, phrases or even syntactic structures borrowed by Greek from Australian English in translation:
Late night shopping > Αργονυχτιάτικα ψώνια instead of βραδινά ψώνια
Write down > Γράψε κάτω instead of γράψε
I like it > Το (direct object) αρέσω instead of Μου (indirect
applying the rule of analogy
I am right > Είμαι σωστός instead of έχω δίκιο

The main language area of these three categories is the oral level. However, they are encountered not infrequently in written texts, and even in the Greek-language literary writings of Australia, reflecting thus the influence of the Australian language mode of communication and of Australian society in general. Moreover, while in the past this influence used to appear only in one literary genre – poetry, particularly satirical poetry – now it is found in all literary genres, and not only in light-hearted writing but serious as well.
Concluding this part of my paper, I would like to challenge an old fallacy which has prevailed in foreign-language teaching and learning. The phonological and lexical borrowed items which end up as deviations from the Greek norm are not, and should not be considered, language mistakes or errors but a natural linguistic adjustment to the receiver language, in this case Greek in the Australian linguistic environment.

The influence of Greek on Australian English
The Greek language may have undergone influences within the Australian socio-linguistic environment but, thanks to its lexical flexibility, its semantic accuracy and its diachronic multidimensional cultural development, and therefore its cultural and linguistic prestige internationally, it has succeeded in developing a steady base of reference and been a continuous source of enrichment of various languages, especially in Europe, and through them in many others in other parts of the world. One such case is Australian English. Australian English, despite its short linguistic history exhibits interesting Greek influences, in many cases unique, as well as characteristic of its own independent sociocultural and historical structure. These influences are found in many fields, including the scientific (botany, zoology, medicine, etc.), the military, the social, the geographical, tourism, and immigration.
Many of the loans are indirect due to the historical origins of Australian English, especially its connection to British English, but also from its contact in modern times with other varieties of English, such as American English, while other loans are direct because of the Greek immigration and settlement in this country.
Indirect loans in Australian English from Greek, especially through British English, constitute material charged with a multidimensional spectrum of cultural, social, political and ecclesiastical meanings and concepts, a fact which undoubtedly has played a significant role in the linguistic flexibility and lexical richness, initially of British English, and later of Australian English.
Here, it is worth noting that some lexicographers often erroneously credit loans to the Latin language instead of to Greek. According to the lexicographer John Smock
the relative contributions of Latin and Greek to the English vocabulary had come to be misunderstood greatly to the disadvantage of Greek. The circumstance that Greek words are commonly […] represented in dictionaries as taken from Latin and New Latin, tends to obscure the fact that most learned Latin words were taken from Greek and in the chief Latin authors were commonly used as alien words, in the best old manuscripts usually without transliteration. They were Latin in about the same sense that blasé, contretemps, and nouveau riche are English (Smock, 1931: xii)..
Regarding direct Greek loans in Australian English, a notable source has been the long Greek immigration to this country. Among the direct loans there are words borrowed by Australian English mainly in the 1950s and 1960s and onwards on everyday matters, such as foodstuffs and meals (fet(t)a, filo/phyllo (pastry), kalamari, souvlaki, taramosalata, etc.), beverages (ouzo, retsina), entertainent (bouzouki), handicraft (flokati), etc. In the case of direct Greek loans there are also the words which pre-existed in British English but acquired new meanings in Australian English, as well as those directly borrowed to render, for example, names of plants, animals and phenomena exclusively Australian.
All this linguistic polymorphism, carrying the mark of direct and indirect Greek influence, covers diachronically the entire course of the history of Australia as a nation, and at the same time exhibits influences not only from Modern Greek but also largely from Ancient Greek (words and word stems). In general, the Greek borrowings by Australian English, are obvious mainly on the morphological and the lexical levels.

Derivation
Apart from the derivational processes of prefixation and suffixation for the formation of new words (based on Greek loans) in English in general, the process involved in the production of exclusively Australian English words is abbreviation.
anabranch [1834] < anastomosing branch (branch of a
river linking two tributaries)
octo [1912] or ocky [1968] < octopus
acca or acker [1977] < academic
eucy or euky [1977] < eucalyptus oil

Lexical level
Independent loans
Australian English has borrowed many independent Greek words either directly from Greek or indirectly through other languages, and in both adjusted and unadjusted forms. An example of an adjusted loan directly from Greek is cleft-y/-ie or clift-y/-ie ( < κλέφτης < κλέπτης < κλέπτω) [1918] which entered the Australian lexicon with the Australian soldiers who returned from World War I. An adjusted Greek loan borrowed indirectly through Latin is the word monotreme ( < New Latin monotrema < Greek μονό- + τρήμα ‘hole’) [1835].
Australian English adopted a number of unadjusted loans borrowed directly from Greek, mainly during the twentieth century, and especially after World War II. They entered the Australian English vocabulary mainly through Greek immigrants to Australia, but also through Australians who spent some time in Greece as tourists (taramosalata, dolmades, fet(t)a, souvlaki, kalamari, ouzo, flokati, etc.).In contrast, unadjusted loan words from Greek which entered Australian English before the mid-twentieth century are mainly scientific terms (zoological, botanical, etc.). Several Greek names (anthroponyms, mythological names, names of places, trees, plants, etc.) have been borrowed in the course of time by Australian English, enriching its lexicon. Such names have been given to Australian towns and topographic features (mountains, lakes, rivers, etc.), even to people as their first names. Some examples are: Diamantina, Pelion, Olympus, Achilles, Labyrinth, Acacia, Acheron, Calliope, Hector, Mysia, Scamander, Macedon, Theodore, etc.
Here an idiosyncratic point is the problem which the polysyllabic Greek anthroponyms create when borrowed by Australian English. Their pattern is that, like most Greek words, they consist of two or more syllables, in comparison with the English anthroponyms (like most English words in general) which usually consist of one or two syllables. The result, to facilitate communication with English speakers who find polysyllabic words difficult to pronounce, is the tendency of Australian English either to abbreviate the Greek name by cutting down several syllables in the process of Australianisation or to translate them.

Κωνσταντίνος becomes Con
Καλλιόπη becomes Callie
Αθανάσιος becomes Athas
Καλογερόπουλος becomes Kalos
Ραφτόπουλος becomes Rafty
whereas,
Τραμουντάνας becomes North
Αγγελής becomes Angel
Ραφτόπουλος becomes Taylor
Διαμαντής becomes Diamond
Γεωργαντόπουλος becomes Georgeson

Many Greek botanical and zoological names have been borrowed indirectly through Latin:
acacia (Term for a family of trees in Australia [1903]) < Latin acacia < most probably from Ancient Greek ακακία ‘harmlessness’ < adj. άκακος ‘harmless’
epacris (Small Australian bush or tree [1804]) < New Latin epacris < Greek επ(ι)- ‘upon’ + άκρις ‘edge’
eucalyptus (“Eucalyptus tree” is the earliest Greek loan of Australian English I have located [1788]) < New Latin eucalyptus < Greek ευ- ‘well’ + καλύπτω ‘cover’
menura (Australian bird with crescent spots on its tail [1800]) < New Latin menura < Greek μήνη ‘crescent’ < μην (-ας) (original meaning ‘moon’) + ουρά.

Semantic neologisms
Some semantic neologisms of Greek origin in Australian English are the terms “platypus”, “echidna” and “Eureka”.
The term “platypus”, ‘flat-footed person’ < πλατύς + πους), was borrowed directly by Australian English to indicate the semi-aquatic burrowing monotreme mammal of Australia [1799].
The term “echidna” (the animal originally known as “spiny anteater”) is a Greek loan word (έχιδνα < έχις ‘snake’) which Australian English borrowed indirectly through Latin (echidna). Like the platypus, the echidna is a monotreme mammal of Australia.
The term “Eureka”, Archimedes’ famous exclamation when he discovered the law of upward force in fluids, in Australian English became the place name of the gold mine in Victoria [1853] where an armed clash took place between gold miners and the British army [1854]. In addition, since the second half of the twentieth century, this term is also associated with the republican movement in Australia.

Conclusion
This paper has attempted to comprehensively account for the situation resulting from the interlanguage contact between Greek and Australian English over time, directly and indirectly, in oral and written communication on different levels of language analysis (phonological, morphological and especially lexical).
It is hoped that it has amply clarified that the phenomenon of interlanguage borrowing is a natural as well as an age-old process among languages in contact. Finally, interlanguage borrowing, as long as it is not the result of blind imitation, fashion or mindless “progressiveness”, does not destabilise or undermine the identity of a language. On the contrary it reveals an opening towards the cultures of other peoples, as well as a willingness for exchange of meanings, ideas and learning in general. This brings to mind Tappolet’s relevant distinction – referring in particular to interlanguage lexical borrowings – between “emprunts de necessité” and “emprunts de luxe” (in Haugen, 1956:60).

1. Introduction
Australia, apart from its indigenous people (Aborigines), is in essence a country of immigrants.
The presence of the Greeks in Australia is the result of emigration not only from Greece itself but also from other lands where flourishing Greek communities had long ago been established (Asia Minor, Rumania, South Africa, Egypt, USA, etc.).
In today’s multiethnic, multilingual and multicultural Australia of 20,200,000 people who derive from more than 200 different ancestries and speak more than 214 languages, including at least 55 Australian indigenous languages, the Greeks not only hold a noteworthy position from the quantitative viewpoint but, in addition, they have made a significant contribution to the economic, social, political and intellectual life of their adopted homeland. Furthermore, the Greeks of Australia, together with the characteristics of their Greek identity, also brought with them their age-old tradition for literary expression (oral and written), as well as their love for literature, a genuine cultural and intellectual element of the Greek.
It must be noted here, that the literary creation of the Greeks in Australia, despite the elements and the origins of Modern Greek literature which it shares, as expected reflects a different character and tone than the literature of Greece, thereby naturally exhibiting an identity of its own.

2. A historical overview
As a preliminary but pragmatic comment it is worth emphasising that over the past 100 years, the Greeks have developed a vibrant literary presence in Australia.
From a historical perspective the oldest evidence that I have located during my many years of research, dates back to the end of the first decade of the twentieth century. It consists of oral poetic compositions. The primary reason for this was that most of the early versifiers came from Greek areas with a long-established oral tradition, as happened with the two first versifiers, Nikos Kallinikos and Nikos Paizis, both from the island of Ithaca.
In the first decade of this literature (1910-1920) oral poetry (Greek-language) dominated, and while this decreased in the following decades, it did not die, especially if one considers the improvised compositions of immigrants of modern times, such as the Ithacan Stathis Raftopoulos, the Cypriot Haralambos Azinos and the Cretan Kostas Tsourdalakis.
The characteristic of these early oral improvisations is that they were born and developed not in the isolation of the creator’s room but out in the community, such as at family celebrations, public social gatherings and entertainments and in the coffee-houses.
This poetry, of course, for the most part was neither pioneering nor of high demands. It was unpretentious versification, the technical achievement of which was limited to the traditional rhyming line, and it reflected little lyricism. However, apart from the historical and any kind of literary interest, these improvisations which were inspired by the stimulation of the moment have additional significance because of the social role they played in the Greek communities of the time with their spontaneity, their sincerity and the enthusiasm of their creators to entertain their audiences or even to make social commentary rather than to create lasting poetic works. After all, these were the characteristics that made this literary genre very popular.
Finally, this oral poetry has its merit even from a philological aspect. It provides the first expression of personal style and signifies the beginnings of the Greek literary presence in this continent of the South.
Correspondingly, in the written form the earliest published works were prose pieces (Greek-language short stories) by the Cypriot George Nicolaides, which appeared in 1913, two or three years after the first oral versifications and just twenty-eight days after the circulation of the newspaper Afstralia, the first Greek newspaper in the Antipodes.
So, 1913 was a turning point for the literature of the Greeks in Australia, because of the following four significant events: a) the first evidence of written literature, b) the first prose pieces that are known, c) the first published literary works, and d) the appearance of the Greek press which also provided an avenue for the publication of poetry and prose works.
Two years later the first written poetry (although not yet published) would come to be added to the early literary tapestry of the Greeks in Australia. Its pioneer was the Ithacan lyrical poet and man of the theatre, George Paizis. Although his first poems go back to 1915, he started publishing several years later in 1922, in the Sydney newspaper To Ethniko Vima (The National Tribune), usually under the pseudonym “Thiakos”. Many of his poems remind us of the Romantic School of Athens at the beginning of the twentieth century.
From 1922 the literary body expanded due not only to the increase in Greek immigration caused by the arrival of refugees from Asia Minor because of the dramatic events which occurred to the Greek population there at that time, but also because of the new cultural atmosphere and dynamism they brought with them. These new immigrants, often educated in the Greek schools of Smyrna and Constantinople, not only enriched the social, cultural and political life of the Greek communities in Australia with new energy but also introduced new subjects to this literature (the Asia Minor catastrophe, the destruction of Smyrna, the tragedy of the Greek refugees, etc.). It is from among these Asia Minor refugees and other Greek immigrants who were uprooted because of poverty and political upheavals in Greece, that a new generation of writers appeared who conveyed new messages and expressed the feelings of the changing times. As a result, the late 1920s and the 1930s witnessed the development of this literature in both quantity and quality, especially in prose which expanded from short stories all the way to autobiographies and travelogues.
Now a number of writers were consciously investigating, sometimes with impressive sensitivity, broader subjects beyond the confines of the Greek community. In addition, these writers frequently published their texts in the Greek-language press, while some of them forged ahead with publishing works in book form.
So, these years saw significant literary events: a) the publication in Australia of the first Greek-language literary book (the short story collection Istories tis xenitias [Stories of the Foreign Land] (1932) by the Athenian Homer Rigas, published in Sydney by the publishing arm, “Intellectual Beacon of Hellenism in Australia”, of the newspaper To Ethniko Vima, b) the development and stabilisation of the Greek press, a fact which encouraged the further writing of literary works, and c) the appearance of writers (although few in number) who for the first time wrote in both languages (Greek and English). Actually, some English-language texts even appeared in Australian publications, such as short stories by Anagyros Fatseas of Kythera in the Sydney periodicals Woman’s Weekly and Woman’s Day, as well as the earliest translation in Australia of Dionysios Solomos’ “Hymn to Liberty” published in the Sydney newspaper Sun (5 March 1941) and poems by Costas Malaxos-Alexander of Phoenikas, Asia Minor, in the Western Australian periodical Black Swan and in the newspaper of the University of Western Australia Pelican.
Additionally, in parallel with the traditional themes (xenitia, odysseic dream of return to the native land, love for the home country, community characters and life in the new environment, etc.) new subjects made their appearance.
Similarly, while many writers continued to use traditional forms, new endeavours were made in search of poetic forms not used in the past, such as the sonnet, with the main exponents being Theodore Georgantopoulos from Akrata who composed Greek-language sonnets and the previously mentioned Asia Minor refugee Costas Malaxos-Alexander who composed sonnets in English.
The outbreak of World War II had, as is well known, a very strong impact upon the Greek communities of the diaspora, including that of Australia. The heroic struggle of the Greek army against the Axis powers invigorated the patriotic feelings of the Greek writers in Australia and stimulated new subjects, such as the united struggle of Greek and Australian soldiers against the common enemy, the fall of Australian soldiers on Greek soil, the resistance movement against the enemy occupation, etc.
The literary production of the war and early post-war years includes poetry, prose (mainly short stories, travelogues, feature articles in literary style) and some literary translations, mainly short stories and poems from Greek into English and poems from English into Greek. Finally, in 1943 the first poetry collection Eleftherias Apanthisma [Anthology on Liberty] by the poet Stathis Raftopoulos circulated in Melbourne.
Moreover, an interesting characteristic of the first post-war years is the appearance of prose writing for children in the Greek press, especially from 1950 onwards. In 1954 the first school text prepared especially for Greek children in Australia was published in Sydney. Entitled Didaktika anagnosmata kai diigimata [Educational Readings and Short Stories] it was written by Anargyros Fatseas, a Sydney resident since 1924, and contained poems and prose pieces written by him on historical, geographical, social and other subjects about Greece and Australia. It also included poems by eminent writers of Greece in the original, accompanied by his own English translation.
In general, during these years, beyond the large numbers of unpublished literary works, many others appeared in the pages of Greek newspapers. A general observation regarding the literary efforts of this period is that, although some interesting pieces of work (especially short stories) made their appearance which leave us with a lasting impression, in the majority they continued being of traditional form and style and did not succeed in bringing the revival which was so necessary.
The year 1952 was a turning point in the history of Greek immigration to Australia because of an agreement signed between Australia and Greece, according to which Australia would assist Greeks who wished to immigrate to this country. The result was a massive exodus of Greeks from all over Greece in the years which followed, a demographic event which, in parallel, on the one hand generated new vitality for the further marked development of Greek literary production in Australia and, on the other hand, significantly increased the reading audience. In general, now the writers appear more dynamic and more productive, while, for the first time, we have before us a broad spectrum of literary genres. The works (poetic and prose) vary from those of traditional form all the way to the purely experimental. In 1954 we also have the first novel, Daphne Miller, which was published in Greek in Melbourne by the Cypriot Costas Athanassiadis who later settled in the USA.
Regarding poetry and prose in the English language, the last few decades have witnessed an exceptional increase and maturity. It is interesting that these works are written mainly by Australian-born individuals of Greek origin who write only in English, rather than by bilingual writers as happened in the past. Some notable contemporary exceptions are Dimitris Tsaloumas and the multilingual Aristides Paradissis, both of Melbourne, and Vasso Kalamaras of Perth. Furthermore, quite a large number of these poetry and prose works (Greek- and English-language) have been published by well known Greek, Australian and international publishing houses.
As mentioned earlier, the first initiatives in children’s literature were made in 1950. However in reality this field started shaping into a literary genre during the decade of the 1980s with a small but cohesive number of works in both Greek and English language appearing ever since.
Thematically, the picture projected is increasingly multidimensional. With the passage of the years, the themes of earlier times which had derived from the traumatic experiences of immigration, have diminished dramatically, and now as the Greeks have felt socially and psychologically more at ease, the more they have felt themselves to be an inseparable part of the broader mainstream Australian society. As a result, their subjects have broadened impressively, today moving not only on an Australian level but also on a wide-ranging international one.
Despite all this, there must be acknowledged that the flowering of the literature of the Greek people in Australia, especially since the decade of the 1970s, owes a lot to the encouragement and the financial support of the official Australian policy of multiculturalism, as well as to the general multicultural climate it sparked in the entire country.
In conclusion, viewing the literary creation of the Greeks in Australia from its first hesitant steps at the beginning of the twentieth century until today, we see that, passing through many stages of development and transformation, it has expanded from a one-dimensional body of oral poetry of exclusively community content to a multidimensional Greek- and English-language literary presence, the latter increasing steadily and significantly. Additionally, this literature which is constantly enriched, on the one hand by the influences and the literary vitality of Australia, and on the other hand by the unbreakable ties with the literary tradition of Greece, but also by international events and movements, finds expression in a variety of genres with a broad spectrum of themes, styles, linguistic structures and ideologies, and is more and more appreciated in Greece, in Australia and in other countries of the Greek diaspora, appealing to an increasingly international audience, as well.

3. The identity of the literature
An overview of the literature (Greek- and English-language) produced by Greek immigrants and their descendants in Australia, in the past as well as in the present, leads us to an understanding of its historicity (almost one hundred years of active presence), quantity, range in genres, and diversity in themes and styles, and, obviously, different levels of quality, including works of acknowledged merit.
In addition, the overview has revealed that the collective face of this literature constitutes a corpus with its own idiosyncratic characteristics, and one which sustains research, independent study and analysis.
Following this conclusion, the point which, as a consequence, arises for discussion is the determining criterion or criteria of national identity of this corpus of literature.
For this, a preliminary but essential point to be brought to attention is that any literary text is written essentially for communication purposes – since the conscious or subconscious intention of a writer is to convey a message to his readers – and that communication is achieved only by the establishment of a direct link between the writer himself and the reader, that is the literary text which, in reality, becomes the act of communication between these two poles. In the same way, a body of literature can achieve its purpose only when the messages infused by the writer into his text are received and comprehended by the reader through this communication link. Therefore, the determining criterion of the national identity of a literature cannot be other than the medium which interlinks these three components – the writer, the literary text and the reader.
Since “literature is made of language” and communicated through language, addressing only those readers who share that same linguistic code, we are inevitably led to the realisation that language is the most determining factor which establishes the necessary communication channel and which ultimately defines the national identity of the literature itself.
Indeed, the power of language is such that not only is it a shaping force of every literary text but it also shapes the creator of these texts himself. Every writer, as an individual, is shaped linguistically, as well as culturally and psychologically, by the language of the social environment in which he was born and raised, because not only does language become an integral part of his psychosynthesis and underlie his emotions, attitudes and actions, thus helping to shape his whole personality (like that of any human being) as well as his view of life and of the world as a whole, it also interlocks him with the linguistic and cultural roots and heritage of his people, binding him thus with the people who share that same language with him.
Any other criteria, such as themes or settings of the works, the writer’s place of origin, his emotional ties with a country, the environment or the period of time in which he lives and writes, etc., cannot link the writer directly with his readers because they are not a main communication medium in themselves. Therefore, although contributing, these cannot be considered as determining criteria of the national identity for the above mentioned purpose.
Furthermore, themes and settings are in no way the exclusive domain of any writer or of any national body of literature. On the contrary, anyone, of any nationality, can choose to write on any subject which may appeal to him and set his work in any part of the globe (as for example in the case of Patrick White, the Australia Nobel Prize winning author, who wrote in Australia but set a number of his works in Greece), of the universe or, indeed, even in a non-existent fantasy land. Therefore, it is obvious that themes and settings cannot possibly determine the national identity of a literature.
In the same way, the writer’s place of origin, the environment in which he lives and writes, the length of time he resided at a certain place, or even his emotional ties with any country add to the richness of the texts by providing themes and a wealth of experience on which the writer can draw, but they function merely as stimuli and influences on him, remaining unvoiced ideas unless they find expression through a particular language, and so are able to be communicated to the reader.
From the above we can conclude that the most satisfactory criterion by which we can identify a literary work and also the national body of literature to which it belongs, is language.
Finally, in this age of expanding globalisation one last aspect relevant to this discussion also merits consideration. With the increasing awareness and acceptance of the role of the «world languages» (with English the main contender), perhaps future studies of the world literatures will see a much larger and encompassing framework of classification based not on the limitations of geography, nation, ethnicity, culture, themes, etc., but on the linguistic code.
The future may well see literatures grouped according to the languages in which they are written, i.e. English-language literature, French-language literature, Greek-language literature, etc. These groupings would be based on the linguistic codes used by the writers, and they would indicate the reader’s accessibility to the writings in that language, because of the knowledge of that language rather than because of national, cultural, geographical and historical criteria. This is not to say that the latter criteria do not deserve recognition. Such a classification could be diachronic and would override factors such as culture change, altered national boundaries, dramatic historical events, etc. It would also bypass the need to distinguish between literatures as being metropolitan, mainstream, colonial, diasporic, immigrant, hyphenated (e.g. Greek-Australian, Canadian-French, Mexican-Spanish), etc.

4. The case of the literature of the Greeks in Australia
The next point which logically arises in this discussion is the national identity of the literature created by the Greek immigrants and their descendants in Australia. One of its characteristics, as has already been stated, is its dual linguistic identity (Greek and English) with a part of this literature, up to now the larger, written in the Greek language, and the other part written, and increasingly so, in English. It is worth noting that the first part seems to be the domain of the first generation Greeks who are in the majority Greek educated and the second part mostly by their children who are mainly Australian educated, although there are a few cases who have given us literary works in both languages.
Therefore, in spite of the fact that this corpus of literature can be examined on its own merit (just as, say Marxist or feminist writing can), it is not and must not be seen as an independent body of literature. On the contrary, because this literature appears in two languages, and also because the most determining criterion of its national identity, as has already been shown, is language, the national identity of a work is unavoidably determined by the language in which it is written. So, the writer who chooses to express himself in the Greek language, and as a result addresses exclusively the Greek readership, definitely binds his works to the literature of that language, i.e. he is doing Greek literature. This is ratified by a number of leading scholars in Greece. For example, among others, Professor P.D. Mastrodimitris, in his definition of the object of Modern Greek philology, states that Modern Greek works are “the literary works of Modern Hellenism written in the Modern Greek language”. Similarly, the eminent critic and historian of Modern Greek literature Professor Alexander Argyriou points out emphatically: “[…] a prose piece of creative imagination written in Greek does not need an additional argument to prove its (Modern) Greekness. Its identity is secured by the language in which it is written”. In the same spirit (referring particularly to the literary production of the Greeks in Australia) the philologist and linguist Nicholas Contossopoulos, former Director of the Centre for the Compilation of the Modern Greek Language Historical Dictionary (Academy of Athens), in one of his articles wrote categorically: “It is, logically, unimaginable a Greek-language piece of literature written by a Greek immigrant in Brazil to be studied by the history of Portuguese-language written literature. This work belongs to the Greek-language production…”.
Moreover, not only do these Greek-language works, and of the Greek diaspora in general, belong to Greek-language literature, but they also exhibit an expression and a tone, and introduce new settings and themes, which all together bring a new dimension to and enrich the literature of Greece itself with the intellectual and cultural mosaic of global Hellenism.
Following the same line of reasoning, the works written in English unquestionably contribute to Australian literature. Australian writers, both of Greek and non-Greek origin, concur with this. For example, the award-winning writer Angelo Loukakis has written: “My contention is that Australian Literature means – or ought to mean – anything written in English in the way of prose or poetry by any persons who care to call themselves Australian, whether they are in residence or expatriated. It does not matter whether they have exotic surnames. Nor does it matter what they choose to write ‘about’”. Similarly, the literary editor and noted poet Robert Adamson wrote: “When I say Australian literature […] I mean literature written by people who live here and write in English”.
As with the contribution of the Greek-language writers to Greek-language literature, similarly the English-language works by people of Greek origin bring a new tone and a new dimension to the mainstream Australian literature.
An apt example which illustrates the above taxonomy is the case of the Greek poet Ioannis Papadiamantopoulos who was born and raised in Greece where he published his first and only Greek poetry collection Trygones kai Ehidnai [Doves and Serpents] (1878), which gave him his place in Greek letters and with which he is represented in Greek anthologies and histories of literature. After this lone Greek-language collection of poems, according to the noted scholar K. Dimaras, “Papadiamantopoulos is getting ready to become Moréas, and soon will be lost for the Greek Letters”. Settling in France, for the rest of his life Papadiamantopoulos wrote in French, under the nom-de-plume Jean Moréas, achieving a place as a poet in French literature. Here, it is also worth mentioning the two independent excellent monographs by Robert Jouanny, Professor at the Sorbonne on the work of Ioannis Papadiamantopoulos – Jean Moréas, dedicated to him one as “écrivain grec” and the other as “écrivain français”.
In the case of those bilingual writers of Greek origin who write in both languages, by applying the same philological criterion of language to them, as well it is obvious that they contribute to both literatures, that is the Greek-language works belong to Greek literature and the English-language ones to Australian literature. With reference to this particular subject, Nicholaos Contossopoulos states briefly and clearly: “When a literary person writes in more than one language (like Solomos who wrote in Greek and in Italian), his works belong to the corresponding language of each work”.
However, there is a trend in Australia, regardless of whether it is in agreement with the principles of philology or not, to name any literary works written (whether in Greek or in English) by a person of Greek origin living in Australia “Greek-Australian” literature. By assigning such a label we do this body of literature a disservice, as in effect we assign it a peripheral existence – neither Greek nor Australian – and thus imply that this literature so designated does not fully belong to either the Greek or the Australian national body of literature, and so is of marginal importance.
By this criterion, for example, Constantine Cavafy, one of the most renowned and influential poets in Modern Greek literature, who was born and lived in Alexandria, Egypt and wrote in Greek, should be considered as having done “Greek-Egyptian” literature, something which is unheard of! Similarly, the Russian-born Vladimir Nabokov, who lived and wrote (in English) in the United States, should be considered as having written “Russian-American” literature, or the Polish-born Joseph Conrad who lived in England and wrote in English, should be considered as having written “Polish-British” literature. Accordingly, Michael Pieris, Professor at the University of Cyprus, expresses courageously his antithesis to “combinations of the type Greek-American, Greek-Australian, Greek-German, Greek-Canadian, Greek-Russian, etc. literature” pointing out that “this did not happen even in the nineteenth century when even more valid historical reasons existed which one could adduce, but also there were more powerful peripheral writing personalities”.
However, there is an additional reason why the term “Greek-Australian literature” is not valid, both from a philological and a logical point of view and that it carries in itself the seed of its own destruction.
The term “Greek-Australian literature” presupposes the existence of Greek-Australian writers, but the matter is for how many generations can we consider these writers Greek Australians and at which point do they become Australians of Greek origin? Unquestionably, observing that in the last two decades Greek immigration to Australia has diminished to an insignificant level, it is easy to understand that the term “Greek-Australian” has an expiration date. Nevertheless, there is no reason to believe that the literary writing of people of Greek origin will not continue, or that in the future it will not even increase, although, thinking logically, the time will come when this literature will not be known any more as Greek-Australian literature, since it will be a term not used for its writers any longer, while, on the other hand, the bodies both of Greek and Australian literature will carry on as long as these nations and people continue to exist.

5. The attitude of Greece
One final, but not less important point which could be raised regards Greece’s attitude towards the literary efforts and achievements of Australia’s Greeks. There is no doubt that the literature of the Greeks in Australia – like any literature of Greeks in countries of the diaspora – does not develop in a vacuum. In the particular case of the Greeks in this country, this has developed under the constant geographical, socio-cultural, intellectual, historical, literary, linguistic and other influences, on the one hand, of Australia – the environment where the writers of Greek origin (especially the English-language ones) live and work, and on the other hand, of Greece – the place of origin from where the writers (regarding the Greek-language ones) carry with them all the characteristics mentioned above or with which they are endowed by their parents (regarding the Australian-born ones).
Of course, there is no doubt that the less assimilated the immigrant writer is to the new society, the more attached in sentiment and in memory he is to his native land, while the more assimilated he is to his new social environment, the more his subjects and even his style approach the new literary creative reality.
Regarding Greek-language literature in particular (not only of Australia but of the diaspora as well), what is noticed is that it has preserved all the main qualities of the neohellenic literature of Greece, while the writers themselves always have tried to maintain close contact with the literature and trends of the metropolis.
However, in this hard struggle the Greek-language writers of Australia and of the diaspora in general, have been engaged and at the same time they make tremendous efforts so that their endeavours and their talent are evaluated and recognised by the intellectuals in Greece, and their works to be published or to be included in anthologies in Greece. Unfortunately Greece itself pays little, or no attention at all, to works written beyond the boundaries of the metropolis! The surprising point here is that this lack of interest, evaluation and recognition of the literary works written by Greeks in Australia, or in other countries as well, is due not to their lack of quality but basically to the indifferent or condescending attitude of Greece itself towards the endeavours of the Greeks of the diaspora in general. After all this is also strongly implied in the frequent subcategorisation of these works under labels, such as “immigrant literature”, “literature of the diaspora” (“diasporic literature”), etc., a clear suggestion that it is not considered as having status and value equal to the metropolitan Greek literature, something not found in Australia towards its writers living abroad. Admittedly, this unfortunate mentality of Greece is partially due, in Manolis Yialourakis’ words, to the fact (especially when judging a work belonging to the past) that “[…] it is not enough for one to place it in its period and to evaluate it according to aesthetic criteria. He must identify himself with this”. Of course, there have been a few, comparatively rare, cases of diaspora writers, such as Constantine Cavafy of Egypt, Nikos Kahtitsis of Canada and Nikos Calas of the USA who have gained a place in Modern Greek Letters, with their works included in school anthologies in Greece, but these are exceptions to the canon.
This disheartening attitude of Greece towards the Greek writers of the diaspora and their works is most probably linked and derives from the more general attitude towards Greek immigration, a subject which is today officially considered passé. After all Greece, in particular for the past few years, is seen as a country which receives immigrants and refugees, something admitted, even reluctantly, by the Greeks of Greece itself. Finally, no matter what the influencing reasons, some scholars, such as Professor Ioannis Hassiotis, even argue that “[the literary production of the Greeks abroad] is a chapter of the history of contemporary Greek literature which has not been paid attention to by our philologists to the degree it deserves”.
The above discussion leads us to the obvious conclusion that Greece needs to change its attitude towards the writers of Greek origin who live and work out of Greece, and actually on at least two main points:
a) complete familiarisation with the literary works written by Greeks abroad, and
b) complete and equal integration of the Greek-language part of this literature into Modern Greek literature hand in hand with the works produced in Greece itself.
After all, thanks to its particular, idiosyncratic characteristics and qualities the literature of Hellenism in Australia, like that of the diaspora as well, definitely not only enriches the literature of Metropolitan Greece by making it more robust and multi-leveled, but also constitutes an integral element of the main trunk of Greek-language literature to which it rightfully belongs, contributing notably in its turn to the latter’s international prominence and prestige.
